Moral Injury

The weight of what you did, didn't do, or witnessed.

Moral injury is the wound that happens when you do, fail to do, or witness something that violates your deepest values. It is not PTSD, though they can travel together. It is a wound to your sense of who you are — and it does not heal with exposure therapy alone.

01/The Approach

How the work actually goes.

Every client is different, but the framework is consistent: stabilize first, build capacity, then do the deeper work — with measurable progress along the way.

01

Adaptive Disclosure

A structured, evidence-based protocol specifically developed for moral injury. We address the event, the meaning you made of it, and the version of you that has been carrying it alone.

02

Self-forgiveness work

Not about absolution. About honest reckoning. You earn peace through engagement with what happened, not avoidance of it. This is where Stoic philosophy becomes clinically useful — premeditation, examination, action.

03

Meaning reconstruction

Moral injury often costs people their faith, their identity, their belief in the goodness of institutions. We rebuild — slowly — on ground you can actually stand on.

02/Is this you

You might recognize
yourself here.

If several of these land — even uncomfortably — this is probably the right page for you to be on.

  • 01Something happened that you can't forgive yourself for
  • 02You followed orders or policy and now the weight is yours to carry
  • 03You witnessed something that broke something inside you
  • 04You feel like a fraud when people call you a hero
  • 05You've avoided telling this to any therapist because you don't want a diagnosis for it

From Matt

"Moral injury is my clinical focus because it is underdiagnosed, undertreated, and devastating. I've done this work because I've lived near it. You don't have to carry this alone, and you don't have to pretend it's PTSD to get real help."

03/What to expect

Arc of the work.

Weeks 1–2

Orientation

History, current presentation, goals. We agree on what "better" means and how we'll know we got there.

Weeks 3–6

Stabilization & skills

Nervous system regulation, distress tolerance, and the foundational tools you'll use in the harder work.

Weeks 6+

Active processing

EMDR, ERP, or the protocol best matched to what you're carrying. Measurable, structured, and paced to your capacity.

Ongoing

Integration & maintenance

Taking what we've built and reinforcing it in the rest of your life. Spacing sessions out as you gain ground.
