02/The Story

From the arena
to the room.

I spent years running toward what most people spend their lives running from. Naval special operations taught me how to perform under pressure, how to read a room, how to make decisions when everything is moving fast and the cost of getting it wrong is real.

It also taught me the cost of doing that kind of work for a long time — in your body, in your relationships, in your sense of who you are when the uniform comes off. I watched teammates struggle with things the system wasn't built to address. I watched myself carry things I couldn't name.

So I went back to school. USC for my MSW. EMDR training through EMDRIA. Thousands of clinical hours. Licensure. And then, eventually, this practice — built deliberately for the people I already understood: veterans, first responders, and high-functioning professionals who look fine on paper and aren't.

I'm not a therapist who used to be in the military. I'm a clinician whose military background is part of the toolkit. There's a difference. You'll feel it in the first session.

03/The Philosophy

Stoicism, clinically applied.

Stoicism is not the bro-science self-help version. The actual tradition — Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca — maps almost directly onto modern evidence-based therapy.

Dichotomy of Control

Epictetus: "Some things are up to us and some are not." This is the foundation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Modern ACT is ancient Stoicism with better research.

Premeditatio Malorum

Negative visualization. Prepare for setbacks while the seas are calm. Same principle as exposure therapy — training your nervous system to face what it fears.

The View From Above

Marcus Aurelius' practice of imagining your life from a cosmic distance. Clinically, this is cognitive defusion — you are not your thoughts, you are the one observing them.

Daily Examination

Seneca kept a nightly journal. Epictetus asked his students to review the day. This is the bedrock of CBT — tracking thoughts, behaviors, and their consequences.

“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”Marcus Aurelius · Meditations
